What is Openshift?

Openshift is one unified solution for end to end automation. It is an open source container application platform based on the Kubernetes container orchestrator for enterprise application development and deployment.

Openshift has eleminated the requirement of multiple tools and technologies for application deployment process. This single tool is capable for monitoring, building and deployment of applications.

It is an open source development platform, which enables the developers to develop and deploy their applications on cloud infrastructure. It is very helpful in developing cloud-enabled services.

Openshift allows easy conversion of source code into running applications, by source to image techniques (S2I) in both traditional and cloud native applications. It’s a integrated hybrid cloud application for applucation development and deployment.

Features of Red Hat Openshift

1.Responsive web console

2.Service Mesh

3.Serverless

4.Open source

5.CI/CD

6.OperatorHub

Openshift provides a responsive web UI for managing everything. Openshift uses Istio for service mesh which is an open-source project for integrating and managing traffic flow across services. It works in concert with an underlying cluster manager (like Kubernetes). Openshift is completly open source. The OperatorHub is available via the OpenShift Container Platform web console and is the interface that cluster administrators use to discover and install Operators.

Industry Use Cases

Senegal’s top telco adopts Red Hat OpenShift

Orange Sonatel, Senegal’s leading telecommunications service provider, needed to speed service delivery to maintain its competitive advantage. The service provider decided that a cloud-native, DevOps-based approach would provide the efficiency and scale needed. By building a new platform, Malaw, with Red Hat Openshift and Orange Sonatel can quickly migrate and build core applications

“When we previously used community Docker on virtual machines,we needed to set up and monitor the environment. With Red Hat OpenShift, developers don’t needto know about the Kubernetes stack underneath, because it’s templated.”

- James Kokou Gaglo ( DevOps Engineer, Orange Sonatel)

Benefits

  • Cut application deployment time from days or weeks to minutes
  • Improved developer productivity with self-service IT environment and automation
  • Reduced compute resource requirements by 66%

Reduced application deployment time from weeks to minutes

Orange Sonatel has used Red Hat OpenShift and Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform to automate time-consuming manual deployment processes. Now, the service provider’s teams can deliver new services and features to customers faster and with 66% less staff.

Reduced hardware requirements by 66%

By adopting Red Hat OpenShift, supported by OpenShift Container Storage, the service provider has reduced its compute resource requirements. With efficient management of memory and CPU (central processing unit) resources, Orange Sonatel needs only one-third of the resources to run its infrastructure, compared to its previous approach of running deployments directly on virtual machines (VMs).

Red Hat OpenShift helps developers use a new DevOps approach to focus on valuable innovation, rather than managing the underlying infrastructure and compute resources needed for a Kubernetes cluster.
